CORVALLIS — The mighty has fallen.

Sixth-ranked La Pine knocked off defending state champion and top-ranked Sutherlin, 47-42, in a 4A state semifinal Friday night at Gill Coliseum.

The Hawks’ upset also snapped the Bulldogs 39-game winning streak that dated back to last season and sends La Pine to its first championship game since winning the Class 2A title in 1989.

“We really wanted to give them that first defeat,” said Kassi Conditt, who had game-highs of 15 points and 17 rebounds.

La Pine (24-3 overall) used a 10-0 run midway through the third quarter to push its lead to 34-17 — the largest of the game. However, a slew of turnovers and missed free throws allowed the Bulldogs (25-1) to close within 43-42 with 1:09 remaining.

The Hawks made only 11-of-27 free throws in the fourth quarter — 15-of-41 for the game — and had 12 of their 16 turnovers in the second half. However, La Pine converted 4-of-8 free throws and held the Bulldogs without a point in the final 1:03.

“Every time we missed those free throws I just kept thinking, ‘Wow, we just gave them the game,’ ” La Pine coach Kim Beer said. “Luckily we had a big enough lead to last.”

Megan Glenn added 11 points for the Hawks. Tess Bennett had 13 points to lead the Bulldogs, who were 16-for-63 from the field, including 5-of-33 from three-point range.

La Pine plays No. 2 Cottage Grove for the championship at 6:30 p.m. today. The Lions have handed the Hawks two of their three losses this season.
