Austin Melton, left, talks with La Pine Middle School classmates Kayla Miller, center, and Allison Farleigh, all 14, about being struck by lightning. Lightning struck Melton on Wednesday, and after a stint in a Portland hospital and an appearance on the “Today” show he was back in school Monday, showing his friends where he was burned along the right side of his body.

Teen struck by lightning goes back to school
Published: June 09. 2009 4:00AM PSTHe still has burns along his right side, and there’s a chance he will need a skin graft on his right ankle, where the lightning left his body.
In two weeks, he’ll go back to the hospital for an eye checkup.
“I’m feeling pretty good, not too tired,” the eighth-grader said Monday. “I’m just a little bit sore.”
Still, he left school a little early after having a busy — and early — day.
Along with his father, Chuck Melton, he appeared on the “Today” show Monday morning. After the spot, which was broadcast from Sunriver, he spent most of the day at school.
The teenager said he appreciates all the attention but is looking forward to returning to his normal life.
“I’m glad I’m back. I just don’t like all the attention,” he said. “I’m just not one of those people that likes attention. … (But) I’m happy they’re happy I’m OK.”
